Asian Music Technology (AMT) was set up in January 2018 in Singapore as a non-profit organization, with the objective of pioneering musical instrument-making technics, improving the acoustics and perf...
The standardisation (design convergence) of musical instruments is foundational in its successful propagation, pedagogy and transmission as an emblem of human culture and expression. (Compare and consider: the widespread popularity of brass bands all throughout the world, and the simple but standardized recorder is taught in primary school classrooms in practically every country!)
The successful implementation of various AMT research projects will beneficially address the need to modernise and standardise other principal Chinese instruments (e.g. Erhu, Guqin) and other Asian musical instruments, which may suffer from similar (but different) issues due to a lack of standardisation and modernisation. (In fact, the Guqin has remained unevolved for well over two millenia!)
Singapore is well placed (geographically, politically, socially and technologically) to conduct the acoustic research of Asian musical instrument, to fundamentally influence, contribute and benefit Asian music culture because traditional music performance is an essential component of Singapore’s multicultural, multiracial heritage.
